>> and the white house is also denying what he calls outrageous claims by the new york times, right? >> that is right. this was a harsh pushback by the press secretary sarah sanders. she called the outrageous lies by the new york times. she also said that the senior staff involved in the meeting also denied the claims. it comes from a june meeting in the oval office where the president was accusing the article of making disparaging comments about different immigrant groups. think article said the president said that they had aids and other nigerian immigrants he says they will never go back to their hearts went there back in the as per the new york times says that use anonymous sources that were at the meeting and were briefed on the oval office meeting. >> the white house also vanessa plan with antitank missiles for ukraine. this is mark a major escalation? >> it really does. on the ground it could be a
4:03 pm
game changer. it certainly a big shift in us policy. providing only nonlethal aid to ukraine to legal aid.these antitank missiles are about $75 a missile. and with them, one soldier can take on a russian backed tank from a mile and and a half away. russia is protesting. they say this will lead to more bloodshed. but us officials say these are defensive weapons. that ukraine is only trying to defend its territorial integrity. back to you. >> thank you steve. the news is not slowing down at the white house. for more ideas hopes to achieve with this regarding ukraine, let's bring in a retired cia station chief that served five years in moscow and is currently vice president of policy work. thank you for joining us on this holiday weekend. it is busy out there. first, how significant of a switch is this? as far as our policy in ukraine and providing this weaponry,
4:04 pm
this defense weaponry? >> let me start by making two points. first, this should not come as a surprise the russians. the trump administration has been talking about providing legal aid going back to july of this year. and you may recall the presence beach and poland in which he called on russia to seize the destabilizing activities and ukraine secondly, the antitank weapons are very important to russians. they're sending tanks to the separatists in the region and these weapons will definitely help the ukrainians pushback. an insert some attempt at least more effectively to have integrity in the region.>> after moscow's annexation of crimea in 2014, this has been a deadly conflict for most folks refer to this as a low-grade work. many have been killed.
4:05 pm
he spent time in moscow could you are aware that russia had a very active propaganda machine. in this is his essay by the us taking this action it will only push the ukrainian forces towards work. what would you respond, essentially to that coming from the russians? >> it is typical of the russians to try and twist things like that. it is the russians who have been the ones mounting aggressive military campaigns against the ukrainians. it really goes back to april 2008. when nato announced the plans to issue a membership action plan to ukraine. that really cause questions raised concern. and then of course, the russians were supporting the process from the region and crimea. there will be significant bloodshed in ukraine. hostilities have increased over the last couple of weeks. but it is russia who is at fault. they're trying to impose a modern-day version of the doctrine were they really limit the sovereignty of the nations and the former soviet union.
4:06 pm
>> and i have said very clear that they believe is russia has provided the truce and the tanks of course that they need this missiles corporate senior russian diplomats make the argument that arming the ukraine, the united states raises the danger in the presence of peaceful settlement and ukraine. where were we on the peaceful settlement process? >> wasn't going anywhere. one might make the argument that by providing these antitank weapons, we are showing the russians that we have some skin in the game. we are supporting a democratically elected government in ukraine. and there may be any hope for some sort of peace settlement maybe this will help drive it. but ultimately think the russian endgame for ukraine really is to support the separatist movement. perhaps even integrate them in some fashion into ukraine as 1/5 column to ensure that ukraine never joins nato, never join the european union. it is really an threat to their
4:07 pm
security. >> this is unlikely to warm any of our relations with russia. and this is something that vladimir putin might have a broader strategy regarding. it is the opportunity of the us to push back against the broader aggressive strategy that russia is putting forward? >> i think we have a multipronged strategy with russia. we saw a week ago or so when the president had a very friendly conversation over the phone with president putin. there was some cooperation on counterterrorism. i think there is a little bit of albeit constrained, opportunities for us to work together with the russians encounter narcotics and counterterrorism while at the same time serving our own national security interest. in this case in the ukraine. it could also be opportunity on arms-control discussions. maybe something limited unlikely as well. it is a complex relationship. i think we have to understand the nuance and those who made too much of the presidents
